Veteran’s Tribute 2024
A Luncheon Honoring Our Veterans

Captain Brett Crozier, US Navy Retired

Captain Brett Crozier, US Navy Retired

Crozier to Speak Retired Navy Captain Brett Crozier appears to be a man who stands by the choices he made in 2020 to protect his sailors, even though those decisions led to the end of his military career. He was fully aware of the potential repercussions when he sent an email from Guam in March 2020 to higher authorities while commanding the aircraft carrier Theodore Roosevelt, which was grappling with COVID-19.

In that message, he urged Navy leadership to expedite efforts to evacuate his sailors during the early and uncertain stages of the pandemic. We are not at war. Sailors do not need to die, Crozier emphasized in his correspondence. If we do not act now, we are failing our most valuable asset—our Sailors.

Following the leak of his letter to the press, Crozier accepted his dismissal in April 2020, despite a surge of public support for his concerns that prompted quicker action from the Navy, resulting in accommodations for nearly all 5,000 sailors aboard TR who were stranded on a Pacific island.

Just months after losing his position, Crozier witnessed a significant achievement: from a paddleboard near San Diego, he saw the Theodore Roosevelt and almost all its crew return home safely after their so-called COVID cruise.

Officially, we will be DARK next Wednesday, October 30th, for lunch as this is the 5th Wednesday of the month.

However, we will be meeting for a Happy Hour from 3:30 – 5:00 at Iron and Vine that afternoon. Please bring cash, and you can pay me for what you order and I will pay the total bill. Hope you can join us.

We are also DARK on November 6th, as our Veteran’s Tribute lunch is on November 7th at Garrett Hall at the Fairgrounds. If you still need tickets for the Veteran’s Tribute Lunch, please email Ann Gospe and she will put them aside for you.

Please note: The bulletin committee could use more writers.

Opening Ceremonies:

President Casey greeted us, “Welcome to the Rotary Club of Santa Rosa where the magic happens while we do good in our world and have fun doing it.”

Craig Meltzner led us in the reciting of the Pledge of Allegiance and the Four, no, make that Five-Way Test. He read us two of his favorite prayers.  The first from Rosh Hashanah:

Love God with our mind: stay curious, open to questions; marvel at the wonder of what is.

Love God with your heart: stay alive to suffering and joy; yearn for the world that could be.

Love God with all your strength: open your hands and give; work for the sake of what ought to be.

The second one is for Yom Kippur, A teaching of the Baal Shem Tov:

Your fellow human being is a mirror of you. If there is love and compassion in our soul, you will see the goodness in others. If you see a blemish in another, it is your imperfection you encounter. Take careful note of the flaws you perceive in others. This is a lesson for you: they are your own flaws set before you, a reminder of your own spiritual work.

Visiting Rotarians:

Marilyn Lira, Assistant Governor, and a member of the Rotary Club of Sebastopol.

Guests:

Ed Bauman, Chris South, and Gary Nicols

Sunshine:

All good!

50/50 Drawing:

Craig Meltzner said we had nine marbles and $53.00 in the pot. Sam McMillan’s number was drawn, but he did not pull out the blue marble. The pot rolls over.

Announcements:

  1. Casey & Polio Bear

October 24 is World Polio Day. We received a proclamation from the Santa Rosa City Council to thank us for all we do.

  2. Jim Green brought a bear from the Melbourne Convention to raffle off for Polio. Diane Moresi bought it for $100.00
  3. No meeting next week at noon. Instead, we will be meeting in the bar 3:30 – 5:00pm for cocktails. Bring cash to pay because there will be one bill!
  4. Mark Burchill is planning to take the scenic train from Vancouver to Jasper/ Calgary for the next convention and would like those who are going to the convention to come along.
  5. President Casey wants to start a fund to pay for guests at our meeting. However, we do not have that in the budget, so he asked us to start a fund. Several generous members raised their hand and before you knew it, he had $805, enough to pay for 23 guests.
  6. Marilyn Lira was here to announce the Peace Conference in Rohnert Park in January. It is already about halfway sold out! Key speakers are Past President Jennifer Jones, Heidi Kuhn, Vicki Puliz, Michael Collins, Mitty Chang, Hollis Belger, Kimberly Weichel and Francesco Lecce-Chong.

Giro Bello Results:

Rich Rossi gave the club a report on the Giro Bello and what we need to do to make it better next year.

  1. We need more volunteers. Especially route marking.
  2. We need to have more food at the end of the day. Riders came in and there was nothing left. We need to be specific as to when the food closes so that they take responsibility to start and end on time. We were not clear on that this year.
  3. River Road needs monitoring to protect the riders when the cross
  4. Swag bags were a dud. We will get rid of them
  5. Donations were only $371. We will change it to a specific amount(s) as a suggestion.
  6. The venue was great
  7. Riders liked the routes
  8. Cystic Fibrosis would like to use our ride as their own fundraiser like Team Asha
  9. We want to increase sponsorships by starting early and calling
  10. We want to increase the number of riders. Registration will start earlier
  11. Not sure if the change in date for this next year will be a problem (July 12). We have already posted the change.
  12. We need more volunteers. Start asking your friends and family if they will help. All departments of the ride need to let Rich know how many people you ideally need for your team. By doing so Sign-Up Genius will be more accurate.

Dr Ed Bauman and why Blue Zones in the World have people who live longer

Dr. Bauman first asked us to breathe, stretch and connect. These are keys to why people who live in Ikaria Greece, Okinawa Japan, the Ogliastra Region of Sardinia, Loma Linda CA, and the Nicoya Peninsula of Costa Rica have more people living to 100+ than the rest of the world. He said we should watch the Netflix film “Live to100: Secrets of the Blue Zone.”

Much of it has to do with what they eat and drink. There are nine “practices”: move naturally, know your purpose, slow down, eat only 80%, eat more plants, wine/tea at 5:00pm, family first, belong, and live with the right tribe.

Hopefully, Richard Lazovick was able to get the slides for this bulletin.
