Opening The Meeting

President Casey welcomed a packed room of members, students, teachers, administrators and parents to our meeting, “Welcome to the Rotary Club of Santa Rosa where the Magic of Rotary is alive as we do good in our world….and have fun doing it.

Julia Parranto led us in the reciting of the Pledge of Allegiance and the Five-Way Test (and we are doing #5 today).  Julia’s Reflection for today…. I found out if is a quote from Pope Francis:

“Rivers do not drink their own water; trees do not eat their own fruit; the sun does not shine on itself, and flowers do not spread their fragrance for themselves. Living for others is a rule of nature. We are all born to help each other. No matter how difficult it is…Life is good when you are happy; but much better when others are happy because of you.”

Sunshine Report:

Ginny announced that Will Haymaker’s memorial service will be Saturday March 15th at St Mark’s Church in Palo Alto.  See her for details if you would like to attend. Joann Haymaker says she hopes to keep in touch via Facebook.  Per Will’s request, please send any donations to Project Amigo.  PS: I let Dora Zuniga from Project Amigo know that Will has passed away. He was so devoted to Project Amigo.

Steve Olson was handing out applications for the $2500 Stan Lance Scholarship.

This award is not necessarily for the student with the best GPA.  We let the school administrators and teachers decide who qualifies as “Outstanding.” The words we heard these students  describe as: service oriented, leadership, excellence, athletic, volunteer, officer, positive change, civic engagement, advocacy, a force of nature, social justice, integrity, respectful, committed, smart, giving, works behind the scenes, work ethic, poised, entrepreneurial, genuine, compassionate, kind, and caring.

They plan on studying and going into fields such as medical school, law, political science, aerospace engineering, the sciences, military, mechanical, environmental science, nursing and electrical engineering.

We had a lot of adoring parents there and the kids thanked their families for being an inspiration to them and for their love and guidance. A few tears were shed.

We skipped the raffle, announcements, birthdays and other weekly meeting agenda to honor these kids. Back to a normal program next week… The Grand Fondo!
