Opening
President Casey welcomed us to the Rotary Club of Santa Rosa “Where the magic of Rotary is alive in the world, and we are still having fun will doing good in our world.”
Susan Nowacki led us in the reciting of the Pledge of Allegiance and the Four-Way Test. Her Reflection is a quote from Eleanor Roosevelt, “The structure of world peace cannot be the work of one man, or one party, or one nation. It must be peace which rests on the cooperative effort of the whole world.”

Announcements:
- SCARC dinner meeting is at Balletto Winery on Thursday, July 25 from 5:30 to 8:00pm. They menu for the night is Mexican Fiesta. Balletto will be pouring wine and you will be able to buy bottles at 20% off. This is one of the more popular SCARC meetings each year so we suggest you try to come! RSVP by July 22 to Debi Zaft. The dinner cost is $60.00.
- The Junior Livestock Auction is fast upon us! The Sonoma County Fair starts Thursday, August 1. Sam McMillan, Steve Olson and Laura Stephens will be at the auctions on Saturday August 3 and Monday August 4, to buy our club 2 pigs and 2 lambs. If you want to go and purchase for yourself, talk to our intrepid buyers. You can also buy and have the meat donated (this reporter has seen grandparents buy their grandchild’s animal to pay for college).
- Doug Landin spoke to us about the Paul Harris awards. This award program started in 1957 for Rotarians to support the mission of Rotary. Rotarians are encouraged to donate $100.00 a year. Once you have donated $1000.00 you will get your first Paul Harris pin and certificate. Thereafter for each $1000 donation you will get a new, fancier pin. The money can be donated to Polio Plus, Rotary International, and some special grants. Remember, if you donate to Polio Plus the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation will match 2-1! It is highly suggested that you sign up for Rotary Direct. For as little as $10.00 a month, you will have made your $100 contribution every year. Pay $83.34 per month and you will have a new Paul Harris Award every year. More awards are available too. See Doug Landin for the details.
- Jim Green, our District Polio Plus guy, says that there were three new cases of Polio this week in Afghanistan in the Kandahar Region. That makes it 17 cases in 2024. Rotary is actively vaccinating in Afghanistan since the Taliban started allowing vaccinations again. Pakistan is not cooperating as much, which is why most recent cases are in Pakistan. We are “that close.”
Recognitions:
- Peter Holewinski has his first grandchild, a girl! He donated $100 to the Club.
- Paul Hamilton is grateful that he is still here even though when he was younger, he smoked, drank, ate junk food and did no exercise….and he our lived Robert McDougal and Richard Simmons. He donated $100 to Polio Plus.
- Craig Meltzner donated $100 in Keven Brown’s name because Keven found a family for our incoming Rotary Exchange student to live with. That family is currently in the process of being vetted. The money goes to the club.
Pediatric Dental Initiative: Tara Good-Young, Executive Director
Tooth decay is the number one preventable chronic disease in children today. By the time they are 5 years old 60% have tooth decay and by 18 it is up to 80%. They service 31 counties in Northern California with most cases being in the local counties. At their office in Windsor, they have two operating rooms with pediatric chairs. All surgeries are done under general anesthesia. Someone asked why a local anesthesia is not used. Tara said it is because they don’t come in with just one cavity, they come in with several. They helped about 1600 kids last year. Parents don’t know how and when to start taking care of their children’s teeth. They are mistaken when they think that baby teeth are unimportant. It is a preventable disease that is more prevalent than asthma or hay fever.
Children may have their first tooth within the first 6 months of life. The parents need to start cleaning that tooth/teeth from the very beginning, but they don’t know it. Bad oral health can negatively impact speech, growth and social development. Once a child has surgery, they follow up with education for the whole family. Jim Green, who is a retired dentist, remembers when fluoride was added to the water in the Antioch area where he practiced dentistry. Tooth decay went away for about 25 years. Then came the controversy about fluorinated water. People started drinking bottled water and other drinks. Now tooth decay is back with a vengeance.
