Sunshine Report:
It is with great sadness that Julia Parranto announced that she saw on Facebook that former member Will Haymaker has passed away. Will was a member from 1985 until 2020+/. He was president of our club 2002-2003. He always started his meeting with “Aloha!” He was remembered as always being prepared for the World Community Service meetings. An ardent supporter of Project Amigo. He will never be forgotten when he (and others) donned grass skirts and coconut bras for a social at the Wild Oak Saddle Club. Fred Levin said that it was not his wife Jeanne that brought him into our club. It was Will who asked him to join. He even wrote and published a book “From Buddy to Buddha” about his life for his family (you can still buy it on Amazon for $5.50). Though he has not been with our club for a few years, he will always be in our hearts.
50/50 Drawing
Pete Lescure thanked Fred Levin for covering for him today (he was late). The pot was up to $108 and there are only 6 marbles. Robby Fouts won the opportunity to win, but he pulled a yellow marble. Next week 5 marbles and more money to win!
Announcements:
- The first Fireside Chat was last Thursday and about 10 people came. We will meet again next month on March 20 at Kim Murphy’s house. You had to be there!
- The SCARC Crab feed in Cloverdale had 13 club members in attendance. An open bar, appetizers galore, and your choice of apple or cherry pie for dessert!
- The next SCARC meeting will be March 27, and our club is hosting it. It will be on fire resilience and will be at the Iron and Vine banquet room where we have our meetings. The cost will be $50.00 for Rotary members, but our club members will only pay $40.00. Please plan to come if possible.
- April 4 will be a multi-club social at the Ferguson Observatory 6:00 –10:00pm. Please see the flyer at the meeting (attached to this bulletin) for more information and to sign up. You do not have to pay until you arrive.
- April 5 is District Assembly! One of the most fun and educational days we have all year in Rotary. The link to sign up should be emailed to you soon. Yes, you must pay $50.00 up front to go, but if you do go your money will be refunded to you. We will be carpooling.
- As you may already know former member Gesine Franchetti’s restaurant closed in December. Now we hear that Rosso’s is closing too (March 1 is the last day).
- Rich Rossi delivered the Book of Why to Olivet School. One of the little boys asked him to autograph the book. Then all the kids wanted his autograph! Now he knows what it is like to be Taylor Swift (kinda, sort of).
- High School Recognition is next week. All 10 schools are participating. We expect a crowd of 75 people! Come to the meeting early to get a good seat!
Recognitions
- Michael Moore bought a new car – a Porsche! He donated $100.00 to the club
- Fred Levin donated $75 to make up to Jeanne…and she just celebrated her 75th
Monica Morales, President of the Global Rotaract Alum Club
Monica joined the Sonoma State Rotaract Club 15 years ago when she attended Sonoma State University.
The Global Rotaract Alum Club started about 9 years ago. It originally was made up of Sonoma State and Bahamas Rotaract Clubs. Now anyone around the world can join. They meet once a month via Zoom at 5:00am PST. It is run as a normal Rotaract Club. They pay dues, do projects, and have a board of directors.
Global Offsite Care (GOSC) Telemedicine is an all-volunteer organization started in 2013. They work through Rotary Club sponsored telemedicine projects to reach the underserved and impoverished areas of the world to improve access to healthcare. Each proposed project goes through a community needs assessment to see if they can meet the needs of the area. A typical budget could be as much as $14,700. One of the first projects was a telemedicine project in Haiti in 2014. The Bahamas Rotactor/Past President helped make the connections with a hospital in Saint Marc. They fundraised $1000 to pay for a laptop, projector, webcam, and speaker.
Project selection is determined by a community needs assessment. Will it be sustainable once completed? Will it have a positive impact on the lives of the people it serves? Does the project align with one of Rotary’s Seven Areas of Focus? Global Rotaract Alum focuses particularly on the environment and mental/medical health. Just recently they did a Beach Clean Up in October. Members from the United States, Bahamas, Peru, and Nepal each did water clean-up projects in their areas.
