Club Assembly

President Casey D’Angelo

President Casey D’Angelo, 2024 – 2025

The Club Assembly each year is a time when members have a chance to learn about many of the activities we will be involved with this year. And to see which ones they want to actively participate in. These include hands-on projects like the Children’s Christmas Program, 3rd grade student book project – The Book of Why, potential for volunteering with the Boys and Girls Club in Roseland, and other projects that are in the works.

We will learn more about plans for the Giro Bello this year and how you can help make it successful. We will also be forming a committee to start looking at potential fundraisers in the future. We will share ways that you can help the club meetings run smoothly by helping with check-in or scheduling members to lead the reflections.

We have a couple of Socials already planned with more in the works. You will learn about these and be able to indicate which ones you can help with. You can learn about some of the international projects we are involved with. This is an opportunity to learn about ways that we can all make our Club fun and do good things in our community and the world.

Wednesday August 28: Liminal Medicine – A Mental Health Clinic
Wednesday September 4: Sanitation In Fiji

Opening Ceremonies:

President Casey welcomed us to the Rotary Club of Santa Rosa, “Where the magic is alive and we continue to have fun while doing good in our world.”

Julia Parranto led us in the reciting of the Pledge of Allegiance and the Four-Way Test. Her Reflection were four quotes on service and leadership:

“People do not care how much you know until they know how much you care.”  John C. Maxwell

“Everyone can be great…because anybody can serve. You do not have to have a college degree to serve. You do not have to make your subject and verb to agree. Most importantly, you only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.” Martin Luther King Jr.

“We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give.” Winston Churchill

“I don’t know what your destiny will be, but one thing I do know: the only ones among you who will be really happy are those who have sought and found how to serve.” Albert Schweitzer

Guests of Rotarians:

Marcus Stephens, Miriam Hohl, Aaron Hohl and Bronwyn Gunderson

Sunshine Report:

Lisa Trepel, who recently became a member, has been out with an illness.  We just found our it is pancreatic cancer.  Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers.  Remember Wally Lowry and Mike McCallum both had pancreatic cancer at the same time and both survived.  We pray she does too.

50/50 Drawing:

We were back to 10 marbles and $17.00 in the pot.  Diane Moresi’s ticket was pulled…and she pulled the blue marble out of the bag!  We start over again next week.

Recognitions:

Two weeks ago, Peg Melnik from the Press Democrat was our guest speaker.  She asked us if anyone had any good wine stories.  Several of us did and three of the stories were in the Sunday, August 4, 2024 edition in the Towns section.  Therefore, Kris Anderson, Fred Levin and Susan Nowacki each gave $50.00 to the club for that article.

Jeff and Ann Gospe are back from their 5 weeks visit to Germany, Switzerland, Norway and Sweden. They were visiting relatives met with some of our key Ukrainian contacts in Rosenheim Germany. During their visit they got about $27,000 in donations for more generators and batteries for Ukraine.  They brought a basket of miscellaneous purchases from their trip to be auctioned off. Bill Hatcher was the winner at $100.00.

Miriam Hohl on her Rotary Youth Exchange school year exchange in Paraguay

Miriam is from Humboldt County and had applied to be an exchange student with the Rotary Club of Arcata. They had two outstanding students, but could only sent one. Our student fell through so we adopted her and sent her to Paraguay.  Miriam had two host families for her year in Coronel Oviedo which is in District 4845. There were eight exchange students in her town. Paraguay is land locked and right in the middle of South America. It sounds like she was in Argentina and Brazil on school/exchange trips. It is a bilingual country. They use both Spanish and Guarani.  Family is very important and most events and holidays center around the family.  She talked about the beverages (cocido, terere, and mato) and foods (mandioca, chipa, mbeju, sopa, asado, empanadas, and milaness). You can look these up, if you like. She spoke of the animals, plants and insects of the country. Sounds like most of the population is Catholic and they have lots of events over the course of a year.  She attended a parochial Catholic School. She played volleyball, track and field and learned native dances.  The Rotary Club in her town was celebrating its 70th anniversary.  Besides Argentina and Brazil, she went to Patagonia, Iguazu Falls and Curuguaty. Turns out her parents were in the Peace Corp.  She finished with “Este Ano Fue Incredible.”
