Rotaract Fund Raiser
If anyone would like to donate money to GRA (Global Rotaract Alumni Club) they can donate the money on the GOSC site and include a note that it is for GRA. This would help us tremendously to continue growing as a club and be able to conduct larger scale projects. Here is the donation link: Donate Now – Global Offsite Care
Opening The Meeting
It is Past President’s Day! Therefore, President Casey got to pass the mallet to Past President Ann Gospe, who seems to have forgotten how the mike works since last year. Oh yeah, she figured it out.
Patty Kolin led us in the reciting of The Pledge of Allegiance and the Four/Five Way Test. Patty let us know that several of our 47 presidents were Rotarians: Warren G Harding was a member of the Marion, Ohio Club. Calvin Coolidge, Herbert Hoover, Franklin D Roosevelt, Dwight D Eisenhower, John F Kennedy, Lyndon B Johnson, and Ronald Regan were honorary members. Harry S. Truman was a member of the Rotary Club of Kansas City, MO. Jimmy Carter was a member of the Rotary Club of Plains, Georgia (I verified with Chat GPT).
She finished with three quotes from former President Jimmy Carter:
“We are, of course, a nation of differences. Those differences do not make us weak, they are the source of our strength.”
“America did not invent human rights. In a very real sense human rights invented America.”
“In a democracy the only title higher and more important than that of president is the title of citizen.”
Visiting Rotarians:
Les Crawford, Kathy Schwartz, Jessica Dominquez…and I will count Past President Joel DeSilva too.
Visitors:
Vicki DeSilva
Sunshine Report:
Robby Fouts had surgery on his arm last Friday and has a lot of new hardware (he is going to love going through security at the airports!). He hopes to be able to be able to help on the Grand Fondo and be back at our meetings soon.
50/50 Raffle:
We were down to only two marbles and there was $205 in the pot. Sam McMillan had the ticket, and he pulled the blue marble! He will be donating it to Polio Plus.
Announcements:
- Kris Anderson announced that sponsor packages are available for the Giro Bello, and we should all be looking for a sponsor.
- The Grand Fondo is April 19, and our club will be working at the King Ridge rest stop. Volunteers will be meeting at 7:00am at the Salvation Army and carpooling to the the rest stop. It is at least a 90-minute drive on a narrow winding road with lots of potholes. Dress in layers as it can be cold and turn hot. Bring rain gear if rain is forecast. Bring coffee or other beverages to drink and bring lunch. Jeff Kolin will bring bagels and cream cheese. Any questions? Call Jeff Kolin.
- Spring Social #1 is at the Gospe’s on April 10, 5:30 to whenever. This is our goodbye to Karen and Dennis Ball.
- Spring Social #2 on Wednesday, April 30 at Shone Farm
- Jessica Dominquez from the Windsor club came to promote their fund raiser “An Evening in Sevilla” that will be on April 12.
- Debi Zaft announced the April 24 SCARC meeting is being hosted by Santa Rosa Sunrise at the CHOPS teen center on April 24. Catering for a Cause will be doing the food. During happy hour we will be served mocktails, but wine will be served at dinner. The cost is $55.00.
- Les Crawford announced the Rotary Club of Sebastopol is having a golf tournament on Friday May 9. Only room for 40 golfers. Contact Kathy Schwartz at (619) 772-6749 for more information or to sign up.
- Jeff Gospe gave us an update on the aid to Ukraine. Local Rotarians have raised $830,000 in the last three years. $270,000 was just sent for braces, generators and children’s health. He read us a recent thank you letter from our friends in Ukraine. “The emotional support is more meaningful than the money.” Sadly, even Denis is now in the military.
Paul Harris Fellow Update
Past President and Past District Governor Doug Johnson received both his level 7 and level 8 awards. Thank you, Doug, for your support!
Recognitions:
Jeff and Ann Gospe just spent two weeks on the Caribbean Island of Nevius. They saw the home where Alexander Hamilton was born, met the famous man known as “Sunshine.” and visited the Rotary Club of St Kitts. They brought back a rum and a scarf in a basket from Rwanda. After some intense bidding, Patty Kolin got it for $80.00. Sgt. At Arms, Robert Pierce fined them, and they will pay $120 toward the Ukraine fund.
Past Presidents: Who is who?
Past president Ann Gospe was responsible for putting on the program today. She asked all Past Presidents to send her a baby or childhood photo with a comment from them about their past that no one knows about. Scandalous!
