Opening The Meeting

Paul Hamilton

Your regular bulletin writer is back from her Mexico cruise. Thank you to Matthew Henry for filling in for me while I was gone. After President Casey’s introduction, Paul Hamilton led us in the reciting of the Pledge of Allegiance and the Four-Way Test.  His Reflection was a story about how his grandson was impressed by his ability to sing the “Purple People Eater” song.  He finished with a Steve Martin quote, “A Day without sunshine is…night.”

Visiting Rotarians:

Karl Diekman and Salvador Farfaul from the Rotary Club of Washington DC. Hey! Michael Moore is back! So good to see him.

Guests of Rotarians:

Peter & Guest Jack

Jack Johnson, Catherine Eggelson and Sarius, our exchange student

Sunshine Report: Scott Bartley’s partner, Chris Hightower, had to have a heart valve replaced. He is doing well. Sadly, Nona Lucas’ daughter died suddenly at the age of 62 from a heart attack.

Visiting Youth Exchange Student

Saras, our visiting exchange student from Indonesia surprised us with a visit and story about her stay here so far.

50/50 Raffle:

Your bulletin editor was pulling double duty today by running the raffle.  $71.00 in the pot and 8 marbles in the bag. Rich Rossi had the lucky ticket and… He won! Unfortunately, there will be no pictures of this event. Our photographer was busy winning.

  4. President Casey is going to miss the next two meetings as he and Pam are off to England to visit with their son and his family. I hope he brings something good back from England to raffle!

Rotarian Of The Month – Susan Nowacki

Rotarian of the Month:

That would be Susan Nowacki!  She finds us the best speakers every week.  Thank you, Susan!

Auction Time:

Our favorite club auctioneer, Ray Giampaoli, had two items to sell today.  The first was a cat bed.  It was sold for $75.00 and went home with Peter Holewinski. The second item was a mobile made of a coconut and wood, colorfully painted, that Kris Anderson brought back from Mazatlan Mexico. Charlie Howard Gibbon snatched that lovely piece for $150!

Recognitions:

Kris Anderson donated $100 to the Bev and Norm Owen legal scholarship fund.  Kris met Norm and Bev more than 10 years before she joined Rotary.  She and Jim met up with them at Lisa Hemenway’s restauranton a regular basis back in the late 1980s.

Julia Parranto also donated $200 to the Norm and Bev legal scholarship fund.

Guest Speaker Karl Diekman.

Guest Speaker – Karl Diekman

Karl is a member of the Health Education and Wellness Rotary Action Group(HEWRAG).Since 2013, Karl has worked with Rotarians, NGOs and health agencies around the globe to design and implement cervical cancer prevention projects, and recently was a participant in the World Health Organization process that led to the adoption in November 2020 of a global policy to “Eliminate Cervical Cancer as a Public Health Problem”.

Jim Green brought Karl to our club to speak. They have worked together in Africa.  Like Jim, Karl became interested in working in Africa going back to 2009 when he went to Zambia to deliver dictionaries. In 2010 his wife contracted Leukemia, and he became friends with her doctor.  In 2012 they participated in “Kenya Smiles” where they sold backpacks with dental supplies and then brought them to the kids in Kenya. In 2013 they decided to devote their time in Africa to fighting Cervical Cancer because it was preventable. They contacted Rotary International for assistance but found that RI was not interested in helping in a major way. At least not until Polio is eradicated. However, John Hewko (Ann Gospe’s favorite Rotarian) got involved and stirred them in the right direction.  The World Health Organization got involved. Pan American Health Organization got involved with an 80-year plan.  Then Covid happened.  Back on track, they focus on vaccinations, Examinations, and preventative treatments. The WHO has developed the 90-70-90 program: 90% of girls fully vaccinated by age 15. 70% of women screened by age 35 and again at age 45. 90% of women identified with cervical disease receive treatment. According to WHO, treatment of cervical cancer is important in the prevention of many other cancers.
