The Mouse That Roared
(Allowing Women Into Rotary)
Sanford Smith
In 1978 the Rotary Club of Duarte, CA admitted three women as members and it was subsequently expelled from Rotary because that violated the Rotary Constitution which specified that Rotary was a Male only organization. On behalf of the Duarte Club and its three female members, Sanford Smith represented the Duarte Club in suing Rotary International for reinstatement as a Rotary Club with its three women as full members of the Club. The case was decided nine years later in our favor at the Supreme Court, thus leading to the abolition of the male only requirement in the United States. The decision by the US supreme court only applied to Rotary in the US.
Sanford Smith graduated from Harvard College and law School and practiced law as an attorney representing school districts in southern California. He practiced law in California until 1989 when he returned to his family home in Wyoming and ran the family sheep ranching business and was a trust officer for his family’s bank from 1989-1997. Sanford returned to northern California in 1997 and retired here. He was a member of the Arcadia, CA Rotary club from 1972 to 1989, then the Rotary Club of Green River, WY, Jackson, WY and Rock Springs, WY where he was the club president. Since 2019 he has been a member of the Glen Ellen-Kenwood Rotary Club.
And he will be telling his part in his presentation!

Opening Ceremonies:
President Casey welcomed us to, “The Rotary Club of Santa Rosa where the Magic of Rotary is alive; where we do good in our world and have fun!
Doug Landin gave us our reflection for today. He read three quotes for Norman Vincent Peale. Did you know he was a Rotarian? He belonged to the Rotary Club of New York, New York. He served on the Rotary International Public Relations Committee.
“The way to happiness: Keep your heart free from hate, your mind from worry. Live simply, expect little, give much. Scatter sunshine, forget self, think of others. Try this for a week and you will be surprised.”
“The tests of life are not to break you but to make you.”
“A positive thinker does not refuse to recognize the negative, he refuses to dwell on it. Positive thinking is a form of thought which habitually looks for the best results from the worst conditions.”

Sean Kelsey said there were 5 marbles and $89.00 in the pot. Your bulletin editor, Kris Anderson, had the ticket!….. but like most, she did not pull the blue marble. Her $10.00 went into the Polio Pail on her table.

Today’s Speaker Andrew Reddie on the Present and Future of Nuclear Risk.
Andrew is the founder and faculty director for the Berkeley Risk and Security Lab. He is an associate professor in the practice of cybersecurity at UC Berkeley’s School of Information, where he works on projects related to cybersecurity, nuclear weapon policy, wargaming, and emerging military technologies.
OK, this was a bit over your bulletin editor’s head. This talk was fascinating and scary. Our country has accidently dropped a nuclear bomb in North Carolina and Spain. In both cases they did not blow up, thank God. He supposedly sent his slides to Richard Lazovick and they are attached to this bulletin. That is much better than me trying to interpret what he said!
