Fiji Water
Jessica Pollitz and Norm Hantzsche
Jessica Pollitz and Norm Hantzsche will “talanoa” (tell stories) about their water and sanitation work in Fiji! Jessica started volunteering in Fiji on water treatment and distribution systems with the San Francisco Professional Chapter of Engineer’s Without Borders, designing and building biosand filters and upgrading water systems in three villages in Buca Bay, Vanua Levu Island.
She liked Fiji so much she decided to move there and work full time on a Rotary Pacific Water For Life project in a village and nearby school on Viti Levu island for one year, designing and installing septic tanks and leach fields in the Coral Bay. Simultaneously, Norm began his travels to Taveuni Island through the kindness and friendship of a Redondo Beach Rotarians who had a home in Fiji.
He developed a multi-year water and sanitation program (WASUP) for the entire island of Taveuni, partnering with the local health officials and training village water practitioners on the various technologies while upgrading water and sanitation facilities across the island. Jessica joined Norm several times on Taveuni to support the WASUP program and they are looking forward to sharing their work and give a glimpse into the beautiful island and people of Fiji!

Today’s program, “Ketamine: Psychedelic Assisted Therapy.”
With the recent death of Matthew Perry, Dr. Suegee Tamar-Mattis and Celeste Monnette want to clear the air about using Ketamine. It is very safe when used properly. In Matthew Perry’s case, he was getting ketamine from people who had no business using it. Dr. Suegee and Celeste are the owners of Liminal Medicine in Sebastopol. Celeste is a Trama-Informed psychotherapist for over 25 years. She has been a Certified Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapist since 2018. Suegee is a board-certified Family Medicine Physician, as well as having certification in Psychedelic Assisted Therapies and other training. What they do is not new. It is a combination of traditional therapy and medicine. Conditions currently being researched for ketamine use include: depression, suicidal ideation, PTSD, anxiety, migraines and cluster headaches, bipolar disorder, substance use disorder, chronic pain and end of life anxiety. It helps the brain to grow new neurons (neurogenesis) and help the brain form new connections and pathways between neurons (neuroplasticity).
The concept is like a snow globe. Our brains get suck in our own ruts. Ketamine therapy shakes up the brain, like a snow globe, and allows for the brain to have a fresh start and get out of the ruts. Ketamine is safe to use, but should only be used with medical supervision. Why use ketamine vs. other therapies? It has a rapid anti-suicidal effect, a rapid antidepressant effect, treatment resistant depression, works with antidepressants and it is the only legal psychedelic. It is undergoing research for other possible conditions. It should not be used for those with psychosis or schizophrenia, active mania and some personality disorders. It does have side effects that include higher blood pressure, vomiting and nausea. For more information contact them at Liminal Medicine, 1020 Gravenstein Hwy S Ste 120, Sebastopol, CA (707) 861-0807, www.liminal-med.com. They will be having an open house on Saturday, September 7, 2:00-4:00pm. All are welcome.
