Opening    

Sam Mcmillan led the opening today. His reflection. “We count our blessings this time of the year and look to the future. The world has given us many challenges this last year. As a member of the Rotary Club of Santa Rosa, I am thankful for all of you who have given of your time, and as Past President Ray stated, out of your treasures, to make the world and community a better place when the need is called for. I have known our speaker Mikel Cook for some time, and he has given a great deal of time to others throughout the world with telemedicine that he helped develop, and I salute him. Rotary is the only organization that I know that can do so many things in a short time to help when it is needed.”

Visiting Rotarians

Mary Graves introduced visiting Rotarian Monica Morales from the Rancho Cotati Club and Monica’s guest Jessie Galazo. Also, she introduced today’s speaker Mikel Cook from the Sebastopol Sunrise Club.

Susan Nowacki introduced Doug Landon, Past President of the Orinda Club, who has relocated and is looking for a new Rotary Club.

Sunshine

Ginny Cannon shared that Ann Gospe was recovering from pneumonia and was on Zoom today.

Ann reported that Julia Parranto, Rose Frances, and their family were all ill with a virus.

Ted Wilmsen shared that he had visited the Owens and taken them groceries. They are doing without house assistance.

Odalis Medianero is going to be having surgery for some medical issues. She is currently in Panama, seeking further medical advice.

Raffle

Pete Lescure conducted the raffle today. Mikel Cook drew Pete’s number. At that point, Pete passed the marble bag to visitor Jessie to ensure nothing was “fishy.” And sure enough, Pete then chose the winning marble. Past District Governor Doug Johnson pulled the ticket for the Second Chance drawing, which Pete also won. Pete was the first Scratcher winner this year.

Announcements

Ann Gospe will send a Sign-up Genius email detailing the Caritas Village Children’s Christmas Carnival. Set-up will be from 3-5 PM, activities from 5-7 PM, and the SRJC Rotaract Club will do clean-up. There is a lead Rotarian at each activity center.

Volunteers are needed to support the lead at the activity tables.

Poinsettia Senior Project

President Kris thanked those who donated poinsettias today. Ginny Cannon, Diane Moresi, and Kris will deliver the plants to Vigil Lights senior apartments today, along with two boxes of Sees chocolates, compliments of Pete Lescure.

Peace Pole

There will be a Peace Pole dedication at Luther Burbank School on January 23, 2022, at 10:30 AM. More to come.

Dictionaries

The primary signups are complete. There are many openings for the second person. The date for delivery to Santa Rosa has not been set. Ted will keep us informed!

Recognitions

Robin Yonash donated $25 to the club for forgetting to pick up her Rotary plaques when she was inducted.

Past District Governor Doug Johnson announced that when he completed his term as DG, he had $72,000 left in the budget since so many activities had been canceled due to COVID. Therefore, he could designate $50,000 to Polio Plus, which tripled for a total of $150,000. Unfortunately, last year was the first time Rotary did not meet the Gates match. However, Rotary International voted to donate their excess funds just as our district had done, making the match possible.

Doug Johnson donated $50 to the Club and $50 to the Rotary Foundation in recognition of his national award as Kyocera’s #1 Vice President of Sales in their recent contest. In addition, he and Rebecca will have a fantastic vacation in Antigua.

President Kris announced that Santa Rosa Cycling Club donated $10,000 to the Rotary Club of Santa Rosa in recognition of the Club’s donation following the 2017 fires. In addition, she reminded everyone that RCSR donated $20,000 to offset the damage to their warehouse and trailers. The money will remain in the administration budget until President-elect takes office. SRCC continues to be the club’s indispensable partner in Giro Bello. Thank-you SRCC!

Charlie Gibbon reminded everyone that tonight is our Redwood Empire Foodbank work night from 5-7 PM.

Support

Mary Graves announced she ordered two lunch meals to be delivered to Norm and Bev Owen. Bill Hatcher donated the cost of the lunches.

In Memory of Tom Lubas (1943-2022) – From Steve Olson

Tom joined the Rotary Club of Santa Rosa in 2002 and was an active member for several years. He had a 50 year career in banking and mortgage lending. His life-long love of sports dated back to his high school days in Chicago where he was a highly recruited basketball player. He was well known for his knowledge of the Civil War and served as the President of the Santa Rosa Chapter of the Civil War Roundtable. His community service also included serving on the Sonoma County Planning Commission and was proud of his membership in SIRS, Hobos and Santa Rosa Breakfast Club. Tom is survived by his wife Judy and sons Tom and Michael. Contributions in Tom’s memory may be made to the Rotary Club of Santa Rosa Foundation’s “Legends Fund”

Program

Mikel Cook presented an update on the worldwide Rotary telemedicine projects, emphasizing those that the Rotary Club of Santa Rosa has supported. Mikel Cook from the Sebastopol Sunrise Rotary Club was one of the original founders of telemedicine as a joint Rotary project in 2013. He began his remarks by acknowledging that the Rotary Club of Santa Rosa had been involved in the telemedicine project early in its development. The nonprofit Global Offsite Care was developed to promote the projects. It has received several Rotary grants to sustain the work. In addition, the Rotary Club of Santa Rosa has helped finance projects in Nigeria, Rwanda, and Nepal.

There are three main ways Global Offsite Care operates. They provide continuing medical education via monthly global grand rounds, prompt teleconsults between doctors or doctors and patients, and support healthcare professionals with technology. The project’s potential impacts are to improve patient healthcare and healthcare professionals’ effectiveness, reach underserved populations, reduce morbidity and mortality, improve the adoption of digital health technology, and increase medical knowledge and sharing among global network doctors known as Global Grand Rounds.
