Warren Hayes Hayes entered into the Law Enforcement Chaplaincy work in 1999 at the request of the Chief of Police, Mike Dunbah. The Law Enforcement Chaplaincy Service in Sonoma County provides support to law enforcement, firefighters, emergency medical personnel, their families, and members of our community who find themselves in the midst of tragedy and loss providing immediate emotional support and follow up care to them and to the members of our community. It is an interfaith community of compassionate volunteers without religious, political, or legal agendas

Casey Carter led us in the Pledge of Allegiance and Chip Rawson did the Refection.  Today he read a poem by Baxter Black called “Take Care of Yer Friends.”

UPDATE ON YALE ABRAMS AND OTHER SAD NEWS:

Per Terry Abrams, there will be no public memorial for Yale.  Please send your cards and condolences to Terry.  Also, former member Barbara Beedon’s husband, Greg, died last week. No news on what happened.  Greg was also a former Rotarian in Rohnert Park.

RAFFLE:

Pete Lescure said that today’s jackpot was a whooping $29.00!  Robert Pierce had the lucky number but did not pull the blue marble.

This week’s joke was cute.  Sorry, I forgot to write it down.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Bocce this Saturday at Juilliard Park.  We have 4 teams.  The action starts at 9:30.

On Friday, September 13 is the Inter-Rotary social at the Living Room.  The cost is $10.00, and we are asked to bring some side dishes and/or dessert.  See Andrea Geary for details, sign up and volunteering at the event.

And if you need another social, there is the paella lunch at Youth Park on Fulton Road on Saturday, September 21^st.  See Doug Johnson for that one.  The cost is $40.00.

The Grand Fondo is on Saturday, October 5^th.  Jeff Kolin needs volunteers to work the Monte Rio rest stop as we have done for many years.  You need to be out there at sunrise (approximately 6:45 – 7:00) and we are usually done between 11:00 and 11:30.

The Rotary Club of Santa Rosa is celebrating it’s 30^th year!  The birthday party is on Friday, November 22^nd at Shone Farm.  Put it on your calendar.

Ray Giampaoli announced that Ann Gospe is replacing him as the Cardinal Newman Interact leader.

Pete Lescure was passing around a clip board for fellowship sign ups at the upcoming meetings.

Dan Balfe announced that our club gets recognition points from RI for all the dollars they receive from us.  We haven’t done anything with those points, but now we will……..

ROTARIAN OF THE MONTH:

Ann Gospe was named Rotarian of the month!  She was awarded 100 points of the above-mentioned RI points that will go toward her next Paul Harris Fellowship.

ROTARY BOARD MEETING, SEPTEMBER 3, 2019:

The board finished the budget at last Tuesday’s meeting.  There had to be a little belt tightening.  One important change that we all need to know is that guest no longer get their first meeting for free.  This was not widely abused, but most guests are not becoming members.  From here on out the guests are not free.  Either they, or the person who invited them will have to pay.  There will be some exceptions like the scholarship recognitions and the public service awards.  Once they become a member, they will get a free lunch.  If you have any question, please see President Cathy or any board member.

CHANGE OF VENUE FOR OCTOBER 2, 2019:

We will be meeting at Legends at the Bennett Valley Golf Course for our meeting/lunch on Wednesday October 2^nd to check the facility out. 

TODAY’S PROGRAM:  UNITED WAY OF THE WINE COUNTRY PROGRAMS: SCHOOL READINESS PACKS, SCHOOLS OF HOPE, AND SUMMER READING PROGRAM

Our guest speaker was Ariel Vipond.  The United Way was started in 1887 and focuses on education, income and health issues.  Today Ariel spoke of the 3 programs for younger children.  The first being the School Readiness Packs.  These are back packs filled with educational materials for the student and their family.  This Is particularly geared toward the kindergarten aged students.  Schools of Hope focuses on kids in grades 1 – 3 on reading skills.  They have found that if kids are at 3^rd grade reading level by the third grade, they are more successful throughout their education and are more successful adults. The Summer Reading Program gives the kids 6 books to read during the summer.  This helps them from back sliding when they are off for the summer.  Ariel also mentioned that you can call 2-1-1 on your phone to get connected to local resources!
